According to the Japanese newspaper Sankei, the Japanese government is currently considering the possible abolishment of short-term entry visas for Russian citizens. Foreign Minister Taro Kono will discuss this issue with Sergey Lavrov at a meeting in Munich on February 18.

It is assumed that Russian citizens will be able to enter Japan without a visa for up to 90-day period after the prior registration of passport data in consular offices. Similar measures are currently being applied in Japan to tourists from the UAE and Indonesia. The possibility of introducing a multiple-entry visa-free regime for Russian citizens will also be considered.

According to the experts, such measures will help soften Russia's position on the conclusion of a peace treaty.

It is worth recalling that from January 1, 2017, Russia and Japan introduced mutual measures to simplify the visa regime between the countries. For citizens of Russia, the maximum validity of multiple-entry visas for short-term trips up to 90 days has been increased to five years and multiple-entry visas have been issued for a period of up to three years.
