According to the Visit Russia information service, the authorities of the Finnish city of Lappeenranta and the Union of National and International Tourism Information Organizations have concluded an agreement on bilateral tourism cooperation providing exchange of information about the needs of tourists and changing demand in the tourist market, as well as presentations of tourist products and routes and exchange of experience in promoting tourist potential of the border regions of the two countries.

As reported by Visit Russia, Lappeenranta will promote Russian border tourist routes, for example, trips to St. Petersburg. It is expected that such trips will particularly be in demand during the 2018 FIFA World Cup as due to its advantageous borderline position, Lappeenranta will be able to accommodate guests of the championship on their way to Russia.

According to statistics, in 2016, visitors from Finland made 1.3 million trips to Russia that is the best indicator among all countries and allows asserting that Finland holds the leading position on providing the largest inbound tourist flow to Russia.

It should be recalled that the Visit Russia project was launched in 2015 with the aim of forming a positive tourist image of Russia and promoting national and regional tourist products. The Union of National and International Tourism Information Organizations was established in 2016 by several Russian organizations operating in the market of inbound tourism and consists of several National Tourist Offices of Visit Russia and a number of Russian and foreign tourist organizations.
