Simplified visa regime between the Russian Federation and Japan
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, at a summit meeting held on December 15–16, 2016 it was decided to simplify on a reciprocal basis the visa regime between the Russian Federation and Japan starting from January 1, 2017.
The Russian consular offices will now issue to the Japanese citizens multiple-entry tourist visas (including visas for “special-aim tourism”) for up to 6 months, multiple-entry private visas for up to one year, as well as multiple-entry business or humanitarian visas for up to five years. The grounds for the issuance of Russian visas and the document requirements will not be changed.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, multiple-entry tourist visas will allow the Japanese citizens to stay on the territory of the Russian Federation for up to 30 days for a total period of not more than 90 days; multiple-entry private, business and humanitarian visas will allow staying continuously for up to 90 days and not more than 90 days of each period of 180 days in total.
Russian citizens will be able to get multiple-entry Japanese visas for up to three years, short-term visas for up to 30 days of continuous stay; the maximum validity period of multiple-entry visas for short trips providing the opportunity of continuous stay in the country for up to 90 days, will be extended to five years.
“We believe that these reciprocal measures will simplify the contacts between Russian and Japanese citizens and will contribute to the strengthening of a mutually beneficial cooperation in the economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres. We would also like to stress the fact that the Russian side is ready to resume the collaborative work on further liberalization of the visa regime until its abolition and is configured to the constructive discussion of the draft agreements on this point submitted to the Japanese side earlier”, – states the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
