Foreigners can obtain Russian citizenship without to renounce former citizenship.

According to media reports, amendments to the law “On citizenship” are being prepared for this. The bill may be submitted to the State Duma this month. The requirements on permanent residence in the country for five years and the clause on the need to confirm legitimate livelihood may be excluded from the law “On Citizenship”.

According to the current law, foreigners to obtain Russian passport in a general way must submit application for renouncing their citizenship to competent authorities of other state. Moreover, refusal is not necessary if citizenship is obtained in simplified way or if there is a necessary agreement between Russia and the applicant’s country.

Experts believe that it will increase the attractiveness of the Russian passport.
