According to Interfax, the State Duma rejected a bill providing for a visa-free 3-day stay in Russia for foreign tourists transiting through Russian international airports.

Due to the bill, foreign citizens arriving on tourist purpose to Russian international airports determined by the government can stay 72 hours in the country without visas. The same visa-free regime is currently available for transit tourists arriving in ports on river and sea vessels.

According to the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee for the Development of Civil Society Dmitry Vyatkin, the rejection of the bill can be explained by the complication of the international situation and the growing threat of international terrorism due to possible penetration into the country of persons whose stay on the territory of Russia is undesirable and can harm the interests of the country.

It should be mentioned that the bill was adopted by the Chamber on first reading in October 2013. On December 6, 2017, the Russian government submitted a request to the State Duma in order to reject the bill in view of the loss of its relevance that was supported by the relevant committee.
